On Hiatus

Yes, I am alive.  I’ve been completely out of action for the past few months, so I’m afraid I’ve been unable to update my research, or keep previous commitments, or answer all of my email enquiries.  I’m trying to get caught up this weekend, however, so apologies all around and I hope to have a […]

Version 18.0 Available

Okay, after much delay, I’ve released Version 18.0 of my data.  The update is not everything I wanted it to be, but it updates several subscription numbers and adds those of the French MMOG Dofus.

The Boston Globe: Race to build Stormreach

The Boston Globe has an interesting article online about Turbine’s two upcoming MMOGs.  The reason I want to comment on it here is that I spoke with the Boston Globe reporter about my research and my resources and methods before the article was posted, yet he did not ask me specifically about what he was […]

April 2005 Game Developer Magazine Article

I’ve released a slightly revised and updated version of my E3 2005 MMOG Report.  Oh, and for those of you who missed it, I was also interviewed for an article on MMOGs in the April 2005 issue of Game Developer Magazine.  If you don’t have a copy, you can read the article in their sample […]

MMOGCHART.COM in the News

Well, Mmogchart.com is getting mentioned all over the Internet lately!  First my E3 report got a mention on Slashdot, and then my site finally got mentioned on Boing Boing.  John Borland of CNET News.com also recently interviewed me for his interesting article “Can Mickey and Frodo revive virtual worlds?”

The Fifth Vana’diel Census

This is a couple of weeks late, but as they did last year, Final Fantasy XI released a census of its online population.  Unfortunately, the data provided doesn’t directly offer any new subscriber figure, but it does confirm “over 500,000 registered users” owning 1,550,000 characters.  Last year they reported 500,000 subscribers with 1,200,000 characters.  If […]

E3 2005 MMOG Report

Well, another E3 has come and gone.  I’m still working on a new version of my charts with the latest data gathered from E3, but in the meantime, I’ve prepared an exclusive E3 2005 MMOG Report of my impressions and expectations of over 25(!!) new MMOGs that will be coming out over the next 2 […]

Version 17.0 Available

Version 17.0 is now up.  This version reflects the latest numbers from NCSoft’s quarterly report as well as some other minor changes.  Hopefully I will be able to get some additional data at E3 and I’ll be able to release a new version before the end of the month.  See you there!

Version 16.0 Available

Version 16.0 is now online.  I apologize for taking so long with this update; a lot is going on in the MMOG industry right now and I haven’t had the time to keep up with everything.  The new version has revised data points for many games that may look a little unusual; you may want […]

April 2005 PC Gamer Article

The April 2005 issue of PC Gamer has an interview with me about my research and reporting, but I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t fully comment on it.  However, they do have an interesting version of my own MMOG Market Share Chart, which sadly is already out-of-date.  It also doesn’t include Lineage I […]

Version 15.0 Available

Version 15.0 is now online.  The numbers for World of Warcraft have gotten a major revision to keep up with Blizzard’s latest press releases.  I’ve also redone the market share chart, since it was becoming too crowded to track every single game individually.
This will probably be my last chart until after the 2005 Game Developers […]

FileFront Interview and Slashdot Discussion

I recently completed an interview with FileFront about my web site and the ins and outs of my research.  It’s a good interview; the only thing I’d clarify is that I’ve never had an absolute dispute with a particular company about my numbers for their game.  Numbers have been clarified from time to time, but […]

Version 14.0 Available

Version 14.0 is now online.  I’ve updated quite a few of the numbers, but the full impact of World of Warcraft and EverQuest II on games like EverQuest I and Dark Age of Camelot is not yet known.  I also don’t have updated figures for WoW or EQII, so both could be substantially higher than […]

Slashdot: MMOG Subscription Charts Updated

As usually happens whenever I make an update, there’s a new discussion thread on Slashdot where readers can talk about it and ask questions.

Version 13.0 Available

Version 13.0 is now online.  The charts now include more data for World of Warcraft and EverQuest II.  Please keep in mind that this data is still very preliminary and could still change.  It is widely believed that many other games have shown a decline in subscriptions as a result of the impact of WoW […]
